I know I’m gonna get me some hate for what I’m about to say. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still dig todays sound. But you simply can’t deny the old school flavours that makes this sister’s jams rich, fresh and stand out!
Easily comparable to greats like Mary J Blige, SWV and Toni Braxton, I immediately fell in love with her (luscious sounds) the second I heard her. And I’ve been talking about her with others, so I know I’m not the only one!
Let me introduce you to the sister, who singlehandedly restored my faith by bringing R&B the way it suppose to be! I give you, Ms Sulpacio Jones:
The Dutch Guy (TDG): Can I borrow 20 bucks?
Sulpacio Jones: Of Course! The only catch is you have to pay back 40 bucks.. Ok ok, I’ll cut you some slack.. 35.00.. Cuz you’re The Dutch Guy!
TDG: When you looked into the mirror this morning, what was your first thought?
Sulpacio: First Thought? THANK GOD FOR ANOTHER DAY!!
Second thought: Where the heck did THIS pimple come from ??!!
TDG: What was the last furry thing you touched?
Sulpacio: Umm… uuuhhh…. My LIP!! UGHH, my waxer is on VACATION… SMH!
TDG: Can you describe yourself in one sentence?
Sulpacio: I’m a sexy, creative, hardworking, candy-craving, online shopping, nocturnal, Song Writing Machine!
TDG: What are your (musical) roots?
Sulpacio: I am the daughter of a musician, and gained the courage to start singing at family gatherings around middle school age. Wrote my first song at 17. Wow! Would love to find THAT demo, hahahahahaha!
TDG: How would you describe your sound?
Sulpacio: An urban exploration of funk infused, Soulful R&B, full of substance, passion & great musicianship. And must add the most important adjective: QUALITY! 90’s R&B meets 90’s HipHop meets Jill Scott then, they meet Sulpacio Jones!
TDG: What’s involved in your songwriting process?
Sulpacio: I am truly a track driven writer/artist. I will take a track and marinate it in my headphones for a few days. Then I hear melodies with some of the lyrics for each section of song and record on a hand held recorder.
Next, I will determine the song concept based on how the track makes me feel or what emotion comes over me when I hear it. Last, I fill in the missing Lyrics… and … VOILA.!!! Hits outta nowhere! 😉
TDG: Which aspect did you enjoy the most while working on your ‘Live, Love, Fly High’ album?
Sulpacio: The recording process! Yaaassss! I love seeing song ideas come to life! From chicken scratch and numerous erasure marks on a piece of paper to timeless masterpieces…
TDG: Who or what inspires you the most?
Sulpacio: My family inspires me the most! Also the uber talented children I see who either dance, sing, create, are scholars or outstanding athletes. They really inspire me! It takes so much dedication and focus to be great at something, and to see a dedicated and focused little person is amazing to me.
TDG: What is the biggest misconception people have about you?
Sulpacio: I think the biggest misconception is that I’m pretentious and unapproachable. Can you believe that? I’m actually one of THEE most down to Earth, humble and approachable people you’ll wanna know. I think because I tend to be a little “shy”, that I’m somewhat quiet initially and it comes off, well, “stuffy” or “stuck up”. But it’s so far from the real SJ!
TDG: How important is connecting with fans for you? What kind of connection do you have or do you like to have with them?
Sulpacio: Connecting with fans is VERY important! I would like to have a strong connection with them because I make music for myself and fans to enjoy! So I encourage them, and you, to connect with me as much as possible on social media, as I’m really interested to know how the music makes you feel and what it does for you! And overall, juicy feedback! I need that!
TDG: And social media is a big help in your opinion?
Sulpacio: YAASSS! It’s a way for fans & listeners to actually engage with me one on one! It’s nothing like having a real conversation or interaction with those who admire your art, and aren’t family members! LoL! It’s awesome for fans, to reach out to those who inspire or uplift them through songs. Not to mention, it’s how I met you Dutch Guy, woohoooo!!!
TDG: What do you do to stand out from all the rest on social media?
Sulpacio: Well, aside from my countless selfies that are soooooo unique and one of a kind, I love to post uplifting and inspiring posts that motivate and promote self love, which is consistent with my overall message of Living, Loving and Flying High! In addition to that, I love posting music from pioneers and innovators that have influenced me.
TDG: Talking about social media and connecting, your album is also available on CD. Hell, you’ve sent me your personally signed & smooched fan pack, which besides your album also includes your first EP, remix EP and earbuds! Is this another way to connect with fans for you?
Sulpacio: ABSOLUTELY! My fans are SO important to me, that it was essential that I give more than just a CD. I wanted to give something more personal and a TRUE token of my appreciation! Not only will you receive the juicy SJ FAN PACK, you will become part of the SJ Movement as my Rock Starz, where you’ll receive periodic updates through newsletters and you’ll even be entered for cool sweepstakes and giveaways!
TDG: Who is currently on repeat on your iPod or Spotify playlist?
Sulpacio: ‘Live Love Fly High‘ of course (sorry but true), Jazmine Sullivan’s reality show and an awesome 80’s Nu Wave mix! It’s actually time to change it, ’cause it’s been the same for a month or so now but, yeah. I’ve been thinking a lot about Tevin Campbell and Johnny Gills big records from 90s, so chances are they might make it to the playlist next.
TDG: What’s the best piece of advice you ever got when you started out and you think it would help other aspiring artists/bands?
Sulpacio: NEVER EVER GIVE UP! You’ll never know when it’s your time, so it’s best to keep pushing till you can’t push anymore, and that’s usually when your break comes! Also stay TRUE to your passion and what moves you! Never compromise what you truly feel creatively as an artist, in order to conform or fit in with what’s hot now. That never works, you’ll fall short, and you will blend in instead of stand out!
TDG: Besides dropping your smokin’ album ‘Live, Love, Fly High‘, what else can we expect of you in the near future?
Sulpacio: Well, ‘HEAT BY SHAY (Volume 2)‘ should be out late Spring 2016, which I’m soooo excited about. It will be an EP of remixes of songs from my latest album with a specific theme, bangin’! Also, a few collabs are in the works and if all goes as planned, another European Tour! Woohooo!
TDG: Got any last words of wisdom you wanna lay down on us before we wrap this up?
Sulpacio: First I wanna say how super duper AWESOME you are Dutch Guy! I appreciate what you do for artists and your efforts are so appreciated!!! Second, I want to encourage all to PLEASE, support indie artists around the world. Without the indies, music will never evolve.
We’ll be stuck in a world of followers and anti-trendsetters. Setting musical trends and functioning outside of the box is the key to keeping music alive. So support your indies by sharing, liking on social
media, purchasing music, attending live
shows, it makes a difference!!!
So on that note, FOLLOW ME on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Soundcloud! Sign up for my newsletter through my website and last but not least, if you haven’t already, treat yourself to some super hot R&B and pickup ‘Live Love Fly High‘, on iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp and all other digital retailers!
